Congratulations to Dr. Rachel Fornes, winner of the 2011 Lawton’s Heart Humanitarian Award given by the Florida Association of Non-Profit Organizations (FANO)!
Dr. Rachel received this award on August 10, 2011 during the FANO 20th Annual Florida Nonprofit Conference entitled –“SUCCESS 20 YEARS: Meeting ‘Now-Needs’ as Florida’s Nonprofit Voice.” FANO, the state’s largest and oldest association serving all of Florida’s nonprofits -- charitable, educational and faith-based -- presented the first Lawton’s Heart Humanitarian Award in 1999; named for former Florida Governor Lawton Chiles, it was presented posthumously to his widow Rhea Chiles.
Dr. Rachel received this award because of her dedication to changing the world one child at a time through her tireless and unselfish efforts to assist children and families through the sometimes lengthy and confusing process of adoption. A chiropractor by profession, Dr. Rachel scaled back her practice in Cocoa Beach, Florida, so that she could devote more time and attention to her passion: the needs of children, birth parents and adoptive families, with a special emphasis on birth mothers who are making adoption plans for their babies. To accomplish that goal, in 2000 she founded the Home At Last Adoption Agency, Inc. in Cocoa Beach, a Florida nonprofit. The Agency focuses on adoptions that encourage diversity, those involving foster children, children of multi-ethnic backgrounds and children with special needs. Dr. Rachel has more than just clinical knowledge about the adoption process: She and her husband, Al Neuharth, the founder of USA Today, are the happy parents of six adopted children, including two sets of twins!
